3、Industry and Urban Construction
　　Anshan ranks among the top 50 cities in China concerning comprehensive strength. It has strong economic foundation and quite complete industrial categories, including traditional industries like metallurgy, machinery, textile and mining; new and hi-tech industries like environmental protection, new materials and electronic information. With An’gang (Anshan Iron and Steel Complex), one of the largest state-owned enterprises in the city, Anshan is famed as the “Steel Capital” of China and is an important base of iron and steel production. Major equipments and technology of An’gang has reached world top level. In 2004, the output of iron, steel and steel products exceeded 10 million tons respectively and ranked No. 8 among the world iron and steel enterprises. In order to implement the strategic policy made by the Central Government of supporting the readjustment and renovation of the old industrial bases in the Northeast, Anshan will develop into the fine steel product base, strengthen the three pillar industries, namely equipment manufacture, textile and mineral products processing. A new industrial structure will take into shape with modern agriculture as the base, new and hi-tech at the forefront, industry as the main body and service industry developing in full-scale.

　　The infrastructure in Anshan’s urban area functions well and provides ideal environment for business and investment. It is one of the 9 A-class cities concerning the nationwide “Smooth traffic Project”. With Wuyi Overpass Bridge at the center the urban traffic framework has come into being. Twenty-four water supply projects and urban & rural power reconstruction projects have finished and central heat supply accomplished. Important facilities like the Western No. 2 Sewage Treatment Plant, the Sports Center, the International Convention Center and the Demonstration Hall of Urban Planning have completed. The urban coverage of greens is up to 35% and is one of the park cities in the province.

4、Technology and Education
　　The force of science and technology in Anshan is fairly strong. It is the national experimental city in technical innovation and a major city of national project on informatization of manufacturing industry. There are 69 scientific research institutes and academies, 780 scientific research and development institutions, 142 new and hi-tech enterprises. Scientific research & technology as heat energy, coking & fire-resistant, mining, iron & steel, electrostatics, boiler are in leading positions in the country. It has developed and owns a series of sophisticated new & hi-tech products in fields of environmental protection, new material, electronic information, biotechnology, etc.
　　There are 4 universities and colleges in the city, with 31,679 full-time students; 31 secondary technical schools with 4,070 students; 171 senior and junior middle schools with 190,000 students; 1,046 primary schools with 260,000 pupils; 1,459 kindergartens with 84,839 pre-school children; 2 adult’s colleges with 2,730 students; 17 adult’s special secondary schools with 3,136 students and 7 adult’s technical training schools with 1,300 students.

5、Sports and Medical Treatment
　　 There are over 30 gymnasiums and stadiums, large and small, like sports center, natatoria in Anshan. Among them, 6 can host national-level contests. There are 4 municipal training units and 7 county and district level sports schools. Events with advantages in Anshan are volleyball, table tennis, badminton, track and field, shooting, fencing, cycle racing, and gymnastics. Famous athletes in National Teams like Song Nina, the volleyball player and Guo Yue, the table tennis player, are from Anshan, just name a few.
　　There are 1,801 medical and healthcare organizations (including clinics). Among which 141 are hospitals and public health centers. There are 18,194 beds for in-patients, 7,049 doctors, 12,025 nurses and nurse practitioners. There are also 1,558 private clinics.
　　Special departments like the Cardiovascular Department of Internal Medicine in Anshan Central Hospital, the Gynecological Department in Anshan Hospital for Women and Children, the Burn Department in An’gang Tiexi Hospital, the Rehabilitation Department in Tanggangzi Hospital and the Bonesetting Department in Haicheng Chinese Medicine Hospital keep leading positions in the country or in the province.
　　The establishment of medical technology cooperation center by Anshan Central Hospital, Beijing Anzhen Hospital and Jishuitan Hospital resulted in the success of 100% in carrying out 12 operations of coronary artery bypass transplant surgeries with non-stop heartbeat, which filled in the blank of heart surgery in Anshan. The success of the first example of freezing and thawing embryonic implantation under the cooperation between Anshan Hospital for Women and Children and American Columbia Gynecological Hospital symbolizes that the assisted birth technology in Anshan has achieved the world advanced level.

6、Culture and Tourism
　　The municipal library meets the national standard of first class with 1.2 million books. The municipal museum hosts 7,844 historical relics now, among which 48 pieces are of national second class and 144 third class. The Singing And Dancing Theater and the Opera Theater are the main art troupes in Anshan engaging in performances like modern and national singing & dancing, and Peking Opera.
　　The performers have rich performance experiences and often perform in different places in China. Their performances got the commendation by the Ministry of Culture of China. The Singing and Dancing Theater has organized a performing troupe of 40 members and staged successful commercial performances in the Republic of Korea, Germany, Singapore and Japan. The small -scale performance they carried out in Japan received favorable comment. In addition, the storytelling culture in Anshan and the stilts-showing culture in Haicheng are also very famous.
　　Anshan has a long history and rich tourism resources. The five tourism brands, namely the World Largest Jade Buddha, the Famous Hot Spring of Asia, the National Scenic Spot Mt. Qianshan, and the Hometown of China’s Precious Jade and the Steel Capital of China, combine together the natural scenery, religious culture, hot spring recovery, iron-making history and Manchu traditions and customs.
　　In Anshan there is 1 national-level scenic spot, 1 forest park, 5 provincial-level natural protective regions and 2 national-level Key Cultural Relics. The birthplace of Mr. Zhang Xue-liang, the patriotic General, in Tai’an county, has been kept well.
　　At present, there are 62 travel agencies in An'shan, 1 five-star hotel and 2 four-star hotels. Over 30,000 employees engage in tourist services. In 2004, Anshan received 58,000 tourists from abroad with revenue of 4.2 million USD and 6.96 million domestic tourists with revenue of 4.69 billion yuan. The comprehensive tourism revenue is 5.038 billion yuan.

7、Opening-up to the Outside World
　　Anshan is one of the earliest cities open to the outside world in Liaodong Peninsula. It has developed 6 foreign sister cities including Amagasaki of Japan, and several friendly cooperative partner cities including Essen of Germany. Anshan has business links with over 100 countries and regions. There are 600 foreign invested enterprises in Anshan, with actual foreign investment utilization of $1.1billion. Famous enterprises both from home and abroad, like ABN Company of the UK, Owens Corning Company of the USA, Hong Kong China Resource Group, Taiwan China Rubber Group, have invested in Anshan. Anshan is structuring the development pattern of “two parks, one zone and one belt". Two parks refer to Anshan Industrial Park and New & Hi-tech Industry Development Park; one zone, the Steel Industry Zone; and one belt, the Mining Belt. Anshan New & Hi-tech Industry Development Park is of national-level.
　　In order to adapt to the new situation of China’s entering into the WTO, Anshan took the lead in the province in setting up the municipal and county Public Administration Service Centers, the Appeal Center for the Soft Environment of Economic Development, the Economic Policy Inquiry Center and the Service Center for Foreign Investment Enterprises to provide consultations for foreign investment in Anshan and convenient one-stop service to go through approval procedures. It greatly improves the publicity of government affairs and efficiency.
