1. Geographical Location
¡¡¡¡ Anshan is in the middle of Liaoning Province between
122¡ã10' and 123¡ã13' east longitude, 40¡ã27' and 41¡ã34'
north latitude. The whole region is 175kms from south
to north and 133kms from east to west. It is in the temperate
zone enjoying four seasons with monsoon continental climate
and fertile land.
¡¡¡¡ Anshan administers Haicheng County-level City, Tai¡¯an
County, Xiuyan County and the four urban districts of
Tiedong, Tiexi, Lishan and Qianshan with total area of
9252square kms and population of 3.46 million, of which
the city proper covers 624 square kms with 1.73 million
people. It enjoys convenient transportations with Ha¡¯erbin
- Dalian Railroad, Ha¡¯erbin - Dalian Free Road, Shenyang
¨C Dalian Express Road and Shenyang ¨C Beijing Express Road
traversing the area. It is 90 kms from Shenyang the provincial
capital to the north, 270 kms from Port city of Dalian
to the south and 80 kms from Shenyang Taoxian International
Airport. It also has its own airline routs to Beijing,
Foshan and Huizhou, the starting train to Beijing and
accommodation berths and vessels in Yingkou Bayuquan Port
and Dalian Harbour, all of which has formed a communication
and transportation network that extends in all directions.
2. Natural Resources
¡¡¡¡ There are 35 rivers totaling to 1421.6kms, among them,
6 are bigger rivers such as Liaohe river, Hunhe River,
Taizihe River.
¡¡¡¡ The forest reserves are concentrated in the eastern
mountainous region covering a total area of 400 thousand
hectares. The main fruit trees are apple, pear and chestnut.
Nanguo Pear is the local specialty famed as the ¡°Queen
of Pears¡±.
¡¡¡¡ Fifty-one kinds of minerals are found in Anshan, of
which 37 have been exploited. Its Iron ore reserves cover
one fourth of the nation¡¯s total, while magnesite one
fourth of the world total and talcum first place in the
world. Jadestone resources are rich in Xiuyan region.
¡¡¡¡ Anshan also enjoys abundant underground heat and hot
spring resources.
3. Opening to the Outside World
¡¡¡¡ Since Anshan was approved by the State Council as the
opening-up city in Liaodong Peninsula in 1988, export-oriented
economy in Anshan has been developing rapidly. At the
present, foreign invested enterprises have reached 600,
realizing the actual utilization of foreign investment
of 1.1billion US$. The world famous enterprises like ABN
Company UK, Owens Corning USA, Hong Kong China Resources
and Taiwan China Rubber Group have invested here. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡
Anshan has twin-city relations with Amagasaki, Japan,
Sheffield, UK, Bursa, Turkey, Lipetsk, Russia, Birmingham,
USA and Ansan, South Korea, and friendly cooperative partnership
with Essen, Germany and Holong, Israel.
¡¡¡¡ Anshan has planned and established the developing pattern
of Anshan Industrial Park, New and High-tech Industrial
Developing Park, Iron and Steel Industrial Zone and Mining
Belt, of which, Anshan New and High-tech Industrial Developing
Park is the national park.
¡¡¡¡ To comply with the new situation of China¡¯s entry into
the WTO and provide quick and one-stop service in information
and firm-approval to foreign investors, Anshan took the
lead in the province setting up city and county level
public administration service center, appeal center for
improvement of economic development soft environment,
information center for economic policy and agency for
foreign invested enterprises. The openness of public administration
and the efficiency of work have very much improved.
4. Cooperation Fields and Forms.
¡¡¡¡ 1/ Agriculture
¡¡¡¡ Anshan is very much developed in agriculture. Water
resource totals to 3.4 billion cubic meter, and cultivated
land 250 thousand hectares. It has become the main commercial
grain base of Liaoning Province and preliminarily formed
ten domains such as rice, soybean, beef and lam, chicken,
mushroom, Nanguo pear, vegetable, fruit, feed and tropical
fish with annual sales income of 5 million Yuan. It also
developed four bases of specialized production, agro-product
exports, green food and sapling cultivation, four experimental
districts such as eco-agriculture, environment friendly
agricultural product, etc. In addition, it has also planned
over 100 small and medium farms, forestry and pasturing
areas. The agro-product market system is getting completed
with 240 rural and urban markets and trading volume of
26.97 billion Yuan. The two specialized domains in Anshan
are Nanguo pear plantation, 350 thousand Mu and 100 thousand
tons and mushroom plantation, 60 thousand tons.

¡¡¡¡ 2/ Industry
¡¡¡¡ Anshan is one of the 50 cities with the strongest comprehensive
economic power in China. It is also the largest steel
industrial base of China. In 2004, the output of iron
and steel surpassed 10 million tons respectively ranked
the 8th place of the world iron and steel enterprises
in synthesized competitive power.
¡¡¡¡ Anshan has strong economic basis and complete industrial
categories. It has already formed a complete and reasonable
industrial system that emphasizes on metallurgy, machinery
and textile including petrochemical industry, electronics,
light industry, building materials, food, and pharmaceuticals.
The number of industrial enterprises has reached 2200.
In 2004, the GDP of the whole city reached 100.6 billion
Yuan; per capita gross domestic product is 29,000 Yuan.
In order to implement the strategic policy of revitalizing
the old industrial base of the northeast made by the central
government, we are building up Anshan into a national
important fine steel base and strengthen the three pillar
industries, namely the equipment manufacture, light textile
and mineral products industry, thereby forming a new industrial
structure of putting the modern agriculture as the base,
the high and new technology as the lead, industry as the
main body and services industry develop in an all round
way.

¡¡¡¡ The infrastructure in Anshan¡¯s urban area functions
well and provides ideal environment for business and investment.
It is one of the 9 A-class cities concerning the nationwide
¡°Smooth traffic Project¡±. With Wuyi Overpass Bridge at
the center the urban traffic framework has come into being.
Twenty-four water supply project and urban & rural
power reconstruction project have finished and central
heat supply accomplished. Important facilities like the
Western No. 2 Sewage Treatment Plant, the Sports Center,
the International Convention Center and the Demonstration

¡¡¡¡ The Singing And Dancing Theater and
the Opera Theater are the main art troupes in Anshan engaging
in performances like modern and national singing &
dancing, and Peking Opera.
The performers have rich performance experiences and often
perform in different places in China. Their performances
got the commendation by the Ministry of Culture of China.
The Singing And Dancing Theater has organized a performing
troupe of 40 members and staged successful commercial
performances in the Republic of Korea, Germany, Singapore
and Japan. ¡¡They also had ever carried on a small scale
one in Japan and received favorable comment. In addition,
the storytelling culture in Anshan and the stilts-showing

University of Science and Technology and An'shan Teachers
College with 31,679 full time students; 39 high schools
and132 junior middle schools with190, 000 students; 889
primary schools; 9 middle and primary schools have the
national qualification to receive overseas students.

departments like the Cardiovascular Department of Internal

¡¡¡¡ Anshan
is the important commercial center of Liaoning Province.
The large-scale trans-regional chain stores and supermarkets
are being settled in Anshan constantly. "Tianxing
Parkson" , "A-Best" , "Gome",,
"Dafuyuan" and "Best" 5 supermarkets
realize the retail sales of 700 million yuan of the social
consumer goods, accounting for 36.4% of the wholesale
and retail industry sales amount of the whole city
¡¡¡¡ In 2004, the whole city realized 19.48 billion yuan
of the retail sales of social consumer goods, increased
by 13.8% compared with that of the previous year. In 2004,
the per capita disposable income of the urban residents
is 8262.32 yuan, increased by 11.1% compared with that
of the previous year. Per capita family's total expenditure
is 8550.48 yuan; expenditure is 6859.38 yuan among them,
increased by 7.6% compared with that of the previous year.
Among expenditure, family equipment articles and service,
educational entertainment service increasing degree to
be relatively heavy, increased by 15% and 12.5% separately
compared with that of the year respectively. The per capita
salary of the worker of the whole city is 11057 yuan,
increased by 24.6% compared with that of the previous
year.
¡¡¡¡ The Customs and Entry and Exit Inspection and Quarantine
Bureau of China have branches in An'shan. The imported
and exported goods can be declared at the Customs directly.

The birthplace of Mr. Zhang Xue-liang, the patriotic General,
